- by Ann Canfield The Dorinda Stock Award, a memorial for the late, great horsewoman Dorinda Stock, is a perpetual trophy given each year to an individual who has shown outstanding commitment and contributions to both MSHSA and the horse community in general. The award winner is chosen by a vote of the MSHSA Board of Directors, and this year's recipient could not have been more appropriate. The honor went to Sharon Pulfrey, the show manager for the Great Falls All Breeds Horse Show. Sharon tells me that it was Dorinda herself that helped and encouraged her club to put on the very first of all breeds shows some 13 years ago.Although Sharon has never competed herself, she has spent many a weekend in years past as a "horse show mom" for her daughter April.Sharon was impressed with the discipline it takes to prepare and show a horse. She recognized that showing and caring for an animal was a very positive activity for youth to be involved in. The show also serves as a wonderful "family activity" according to Sharon. Sharon managed the 2nd all breeds show and has continued managing the show for a total of 12 years now.Managing the very popular Great Falls All Breeds Show is only a portion of this diverse woman's contributions. About 6years ago, Sharon began organizing clinics as a way to improve and encourage new riders, as well as to promote the annual All Breed's Show. She already has two clinics in the works for the 2000 season. Sharon and the GFABHS Club will offer 5days of hunter/jumper instruction and a Jackpot Jumper show in May, as well as a trail clinic and judged ride on June 4th. In addition to these clinics, Sharon is contemplating managing a MHJA approved hunter/jumper show in September, which is looking quite positive so far. For more information please call Sharon at 453-3030.Although Sharon enjoys occasional trail rides, and rides with the grandkids on her daughter's 21 year-old Arabian, she rarely finds the time . Organizing shows and clinics keeps her very busy. When asked what her secret is to making the Great Falls All Breeds Horse Show such a fun and successful event, Sharon states that she starts very early in the year with specific goals and deadlines. She credits her excellent staff and club members with their help in meeting the deadlines that have been set. She keeps her cool during the show by listing the times, days and job descriptions of each volunteer. Sharon then checks in with each individual throughout the day to see how their job is going and to answer questions. She is also available throughout the day to talk to exhibitors and to fill in where ever she is needed.Just about anyone who has attended the Great Falls All Breeds Horse Show will agree that it is a top-notch event. In addition to the pleasure of competing at such a well-run event, exhibitors also enjoy just plain great prizes! The numerous class sponsors that contribute cash, merchandise and services are all contacted by the show staff, including Sharon. Awards are well thought out and varied year-to-year, keeping quality and usefulness as a priority. This year, in addition to the fabulous prizes awarded, the show will offer a different approach to placing classes. Striving continually to improve the quality of the event, this summer's show will have both judges placing certain classes separately. That means 2 sets of ribbons, 2 sets of points! As if the GFAB Horse Show, clinics hunter/jumper shows were not enough, Sharon and the club's unyielding commitment to the horse community also have sponsored mini-horse/pony schooling shows, barrel racing clinics, 4-H scholarship clinics and Canadian based instructor clinics. Luckily for all us exhibitors, Sharon says that with the help of the club's very talented and capable show secretary and dedicated club members, she will continue to manage the GFABHS as long as she is able. We Salute Sharon!
